The most southern island of the Major Kurile Ridge is Kunashir. Kunashir is one of the world’s nine major migratory routes for birds, and therefore thousands of ducks, geese, and waders stop here in spring and autumn. Its length is 123 km, with varies from 7 to 35 km, its area is 1548 sq.km. Tyatya (1822 m.) is one of the most picturesque volcanoes of the world. It is located on the northeastern Pacific coast of Kunashir Island. The unique creation of nature is the Stolbchaty (Columnar) Cape. This is a real reserve of volcanic domes formed as a result of the slow extrusion of thick sticky lava with the following hardening. It can be observed by several dozens of meters vertically. The columns are actually tetrahedral, pentahedral and hexahedral prisms 0,4 - 0,5 meters in diameter.
The seashore is thickly paved with columns. In one case it resembles timber planking, in the other case, when the polished by the sea end surface of the columns are clearly seen as a stone pavement.
To getting there take a 90 minute flight or 18-hour ferry from Sakhalin Island to Yuzhno- Kurilsk city. Flights are often cancelled in summer because of fog. The ferry, which departs from Korsakov Port on Sakhalin is reliable.
